Happy Thursday, and Happy early Valentine's Day!

Tomorrow will be a busy day, so we're posting early. Don't forget that our Valentine exchange is tomorrow. Students will need Valentines for their friends and a box to put them in. We will provide a bag if they don't have a box.

**Thank you so much for all the cards, gifts, flowers, and snacks that we've received this week!! We have really felt appreciated!! Thank you for all of your support and making our job easier!

Congratulations to Melissa! She is our star student this week. We have had a great week learning all about Melissa and what she loves! Melissa shared with us that she wants to be an engineer, and she loves the book What If Everybody Did That. We also learned that her favorite holiday is the 4th of July because she likes the fireworks. That's awesome, Melissa! Thanks for sharing! Way to shine!!

 

Math

In math in two weeks we will finish our unit on money word problems and start a new unit on adding four 2 digit numbers. We will use different strategies to add these numbers including making a ten and using doubles. We will also learn the algorithm. 

 

Reading

In reading, we will continue with our unit on point of view by reading several books and looking at the story from all of the character's perspective.

 

Writing

In writing we will continue writing opinion stories. We will write about what we think is the best place to vacation. Then they will make a brochure to go with our story.

 

Science

In Science we will start our unit on seasons. We will learn why we have seasons and how the Earth rotates around the sun.

Happy Friday!

We hope you've had a good week and were able to get outside for a brief time to enjoy the fleeting nice weather!

Congratulations to Kinley! She is our star student this week. We had an awesome time learning all about what Kinley loves. We learned that she loves the movie Max and is really good at building Legos. She also shared with us her gymnastics medals. So cool! Thanks for sharing, Kinley! Way to shine!

 

As always, we have been super busy in 2nd grade! Here's what's going on in room 212 next week: 

 

Math

In math next week, we will be focusing on word problems with money. This week we practiced counting money, so that next week we can work on word problems. 

Continue practicing counting coins and math facts at home.

 

Reading

In reading, we will learn all about point of view and how each character in a story is feeling. We will read different versions of the classic Three Little Pigs, and we will look at the story from the pigs' perspective and then the wolf's perspective. The students always love these stories!

 

Writing

In writing, we will talk about shades of meaning. For example, when you have a describing word such as happy, there are many "shades" of the word, like happy, excited, thrilled, and ecstatic. We will practice using these colorful words in writing as well.

 

Science

In science, we will continue learning about environmental changes. This week we learned about how the weather can affect the environment, and next week we will look at how pollution affects the environment as well.

Happy Friday! Can you believe it is finally the last day of January?! It has been a looong month, but we have been working hard and learning a lot in 2nd grade!

Congratulations to Payton! He is the newest member of our class and our star student this week. We enjoyed getting to know Payton and all of his favorite things. Payton shared with us a Captain Underpants book, and we learned he loves pizza and football. Welcome to our class, Payton, and thanks for sharing! You're a star!

Math

In math next week, we are going back to money. This time we will count quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies. We will also do money word problems with coins and dollars.

Please practice counting coins at home, as this is a necessary life skill.

 

Reading

In reading, we will continue reading fables by reading The City Mouse and the Country Mouse. We will then use pictures to retell the story. We will also read The Boy Who Cried Wolf and then summarize it.

 

Writing

In writing we will learn about conjunctions and how to use these words to make compound sentences. We will practice this in our writing as well.

 

Science

We will be returning to Science with a unit on environmental changes. We will look at how the weather can change landforms such as rocks and mountains. We will even do a cool experiment.

Happy Friday!

We hope everyone had a good holiday on Monday!

The weather has not been great this week for outdoor play, so we've had a lot of indoor recess. Hopefully it will be better next week! We definitely need sunshine and a chance to stretch our legs! :)

Math

In math next week we will continue working on adding and subtracting 3 digit numbers. The students will get to choose which strategy works best for them between expanded form and number line. Most students will use expanded form which is actually what we prefer because it is closest to the algorithm.

 

Reading

Next week we will start a new unit on fables. We will learn what a fable is and read several examples. Students will also practice retelling fables and writing a summary using First, Next, Then, Last.

 

Writing

In writing we started an opinion piece about whether we should have more recess time at school. Students will use the OREO format to state their opinion with reasons and evidence. 

 

Social Studies

In social studies we will start our unit on Juliette Gordon Low, the founder of Girl Scouts. We will learn about how she showed bravery and leadership in a time when women didn't have a lot of rights.

Happy Friday, and

Happy Martin Luther King, Jr. Day on Monday!!

Don't forget that there is no school on Monday to celebrate this holiday. We have been learning all about Dr. King over the last couple of weeks. Ask your child about Martin Luther King, Jr. and why he is important.

Congratulations to Jace! He is our star student this week. We had a great week learning all about Jace. He shared with us his cool Beyblades for show and tale and read us his favorite Lego Super Heroes book. We also learned that he loves to visit Disneyland, and he wants to be an architect when he grows up. That's awesome! Thanks for sharing, Jace! You're a star!

 

Math

In math next week, we will continue working on addition and subtraction strategies with 3 digit numbers. We will focus on using an open number line. Being able to count forward and backwards by 100s, 10s, and 1s is very important for this strategy.

 

Reading

We are loving our unit on fairy tales! Next week we will read Goldilocks and the Three Bears and a version of this classic called Leola and the Honeybears. We will continue asking and answering questions before, during, and after reading and comparing/contrasting the two stories.

 

Writing

In writing we are writing opinion letters. This week we wrote letters to our friends about the best book. Next week we will write about what is the best thing to do during recess. We are using OREO to help us with opinion writing. Hopefully, your child told you what it stands for this week. If not, make sure to ask them. They might even sing the song for you. :)

 

Social Studies

In social studies this week we started our unit on Jackie Robinson. We are learning about how Jackie Robinson changed major league baseball for the better. We are also learning about how he was very brave and showed great sportsmanship.

We hope everyone had a restful break! We had a great first week back, and the class focused on getting back into our routine and making goals for the new year. Ask your child about the goals they set for themselves for this new year.

Congratulations to Cameron! He is our star student this week. We had a great week learning all about Cameron and what he loves! We learned that Cameron loves to visit North Carolina, play Lacrosse, and he wants to be a police officer when he grows up. That's so cool, Cameron! Way to shine! You're a star!

Math

In math next week we will begin our unit on adding and subtracting 3 digit numbers with regrouping. We will focus on the strategies expanded form and number line. We will start with expanded form with no regrouping. 

Over the next couple of weeks, we will make tutorials on Seesaw showing the strategies we will be using.

Please continue practicing those math facts at home as well.

 

Reading

In reading we have started a unit on fairy tales. We will be reading different versions of the same fairy tale and then comparing and contrasting them. This week we read Red Riding Hood and Lon PoPo, which is a Chinese version of this classic fairy tale. The class loved it!

Next week we will read the classic fairy tale Cinderella, and then read a Native American version called The Rough Faced Girl.

 

Writing

In writing this week we learned all about adjectives and adverbs.

Next week, we will start opinion writing by writing letters. Our first letter will be to a friend about our favorite book. 

We will also practice using adjectives and adverbs in our writing to add more details and make it better.

 

Social Studies

In social studies this week we started a unit on Martin Luther King, Jr. We will continue this unit next week learning all about how Dr. King fought for equality and civil rights by peacefully protesting and giving speeches.

We will also start a new unit on Jackie Robinson as well.

Congratulations to Kennedy! She is our star student this week. We loved learning all about Kennedy and her favorite things. We learned that Kennedy loves the beach, and she read a great book to us called Turkey Trouble. She also shared that she loves Mexican food (yum!) and Christmas. Thanks for sharing with us, Kennedy! Way to shine!

 

 

Can you believe we only have 1 week of school before we're out for Christmas break? These weeks since Thanksgiving have flown by! Next week will be a busy week for 2nd grade. We have a lot going on!

Happy Friday! We hope everyone had a good week! We had a great week in 2nd grade! Today we had our first 2nd grade math chairs competition, and Tyler from our class came in 2nd place overall! Way to go, Tyler!

Congratulations to Aaleyiah! She is our star student this week. We had a great time learning all about what Aaleyiah loves! She shared with us how she loves art and Disney World, and we learned all about her dogs. We also learned that she wants to be a vet when she grows up. Thanks for sharing with us, Aaleyiah! You're a star!

 

Check out what we're learning in 2nd grade next week: 

Math

In math, we will start a new unit on measurement. We will explore nonstandard and  standard units of measurement (feet, inches, and yards) and metric unit as well (centimeters, meters). We will learn how to measure objects, and then we will practice solving word problems with measurement.

Keep practicing those math facts at home. Starting in January, we will be having math drills every Friday starting with the 2s. Make sure you are practicing addition and subtraction together.

 

Reading 

In reading next week we will be wrapping up our unit on poetry by actually writing poems. Students will get a chance to write acrostic poems, sensory poems, and even a concrete poem. Look for these poems on Seesaw.

 

Writing

In writing, we will finish our unit on root words, prefixes, and suffixes.

We will also wrap up our unit on informational writing by writing about our own Kemp Elementary. They will work with partners to write all about our school including a bold beginning and a conclusion.

 

Science

In science we will start a new unit on stars. We will learn all about stars and their physical attributes including size and brightness. We will even learn about a very important star, the sun.

Happy Friday! We hope everyone is staying warm and dry! We haven't had much outside time this week because of the weather, but we are hoping for warmer days next week.

Congratulations to Tyler! He is our star student this week. We have had an awesome time learning all about Tyler. He has shared with us some cool things, such as his dad's baseball glove. We also learned that Tyler loves to visit Orlando, Florida and that he is really good at soccer. Thanks for sharing, Tyler! Way to shine!

Math

In math this week we practiced telling time to the 5 minutes. Keep practicing this life skill at home.

Next week we will begin addition and subtraction with regrouping. We will start with 2 digit numbers, then move on to 3 digit numbers. They will be learning strategies that might be new to parents, but we promise they will learn the algorithm later on. :)

Continue practicing those math facts at home. When we start 3 digit addition and subtraction, it will help tremendously to know their facts.

 

Reading

In reading next week, we will be starting a new unit on poetry. This is a favorite unit for everyone. We will learn what a poem is and what makes it a poem. We will learn about rhyming words, alliteration, and repetition in a poem as well.

 

Writing

In writing we have finished our bat stories, and they are so good! We will begin posting them to Seesaw next week.

This week we started working on our biographies. Each student chose a historical figure that we have been learning about in social studies. Then they did research on their person using a graphic organizer.

Next week we will begin writing our biographies.

 

Science

We are starting a new unit in science next week on forces and motion. We will learn all about what makes things move and how they move. We will talk about friction and pushes and pulls as well.
