Last Week of School Activities

Monday is Read-In Day!  Students may bring a pillow, blanket, or sleeping bag.  They may also bring in their favorite chapter book and picture book to share with the class!

Tuesday is Game Day!  Students may bring in their favorite game to play with their friends.  Please do not allow your child to bring in any electronic games, Nintendo DS, iPods, etc...

Wednesday is Memory Day!  Students may bring in their Yearbooks or other items to sign.

Thursday is Sports Day!  Students may wear their favorite sports jersey, t-shirt, or uniform to school.  They may also bring in a sports reated Show-and-Tell item if they like!

Friday is our 3rd Grade Party!  Students should not bring anything with them to school on Friday!

Field Day!

Field day Weather permitting, Field Day will be this Wednesday, May 13, 2009! 

Please make sure that your child has on appropriate shoes for all activities.  (Students should NOT wear flip flops, crocs, sandals, loafers, etc...)  

Please send a towel, change of clothes, and a bag for dirty/wet clothes to come home in!  Students will be miserable if they have to sit in wet clothes all day.  Students are allowed to wear their swim suits UNDER their clothes only.

What are we studying?

For this last nine week grading period we will be working on...School_writing

Math:  We will be extending our multiplication and division skills!  Students are beginning to multiply and divide two and three digit numbers by single digit numbers.  We will finish us the nine weeks collecting data to create graphs, while studying how to interpret graphs.

Reading:  Students will continue to use UNRAAVEL as they sharpen their reading comprehension skills.  We will also be studying poetry!

Writing:  Students will be writing narratives!  They will also continue to work on applying grammar skills while they write.

Science:  During the final nine weeks, we will be studying heat, how it is created, and how it affects the world around us.  Our last unit will focus on recycling, conservation, pollution, and the impact humans have on their environment. 

Social Studies:  We will continue to review and learn more about the people we have studied this year that have helped expand the rights and freedoms of people in the United States like Paul Revere, Frederick Douglass, Susan B. Anthony, Mary McLeod Bethune, Franklin Roosevelt, and Eleanor Roosevelt.  Over the next few weeks we will start learning about Thurgood Marshall, Lyndon B. Johnson, and Cesar Chavez.

Calling all Arthur Fans!

Have you ever wanted to create your own cartoon character?  Well now you can!  Kids Arthur ages 6-12 are invited to create a new character for a guest appearance on Arthur.  The selected student and his/her character will be featured in a live-action segment on the Arthur TV show.  They will also receive a visit from Arthur creator Marc Brown at their school!

3rd Nine Weeks

What are we studying?  

PenguinMath: We are working on the relationship between fractions and decimals, measurement, perimeter, and area.  We are also continuing to practice our multiplication and division facts so we will be ready for extending multiplication!

Social Studies:  We are learning about the many people who helped expand people's right and freedoms in our country like Frederick Douglass, Susan B. Anthony, and Mary McLeod Bethune.

Science:  We are studying how organisms depend on their environments and the imporantance of habitats.  We will also be looking at the various habitats found in Georgia.

Reading:  We will be looking at the elements of fiction like character, setting, problem, solution, and plot.  Our Buckle Down books will also be helping us review all of our reading strategies.  We will also be working on inferencing and determining cause and effect.  Soon we will begin participating in literature circles with fictional texts!  We are looking forward to it!

Writing/Grammar:  Our focus during this grading period will be writing to convince or persuade.  We will be working on using valid reasons to support our opinions and using credible sources for more information.  We will continue to work on our conventions using DOL and Mountain Language.
